double digits
I stayed at my folks' place overnight this past Friday since we were leaving the next day for a family wedding in Mansfield. This made Saturday's long run a morning trek across Bay Village and back. And Bay Village is long.
It was an extremely humid day which made things a little tougher. When I made the turn at Clague Road, home base felt very far away and I started hoping that either Mr. Remein or Mr. Manas would happen to be out on their lawn with a garden hose. They were not, but I kept moving and eventually completed the ten miles, after which I proceeded to transform into my alter-ego, Slippery Man. Could I have gone eleven? No, probably not.
The highlight of the run occurred about a mile in, when I caught sight of and called out to Mr. Knap, one of my old cross country coaches. He slowed his Jeep down enough for us to hold a brief conversation while traveling down the road. I told him I was training for Chicago, which brought a smile to his face. He called it a fun race and told me to take it slow, advice that is quickly becoming the "shoot your eye out" refrain of my training experience. I do think it is good advice though. I also need to start making sure I pass by water fountains during these long runs. Water is fantastic.
In other news, I learned today that I have reawakened the dormant (for me) ability to touch my toes. Things are going to start happening to me now!

"could i have run another mile? no, probably not"
i ran my 10 mile friday and by mile 8 my knees were screaming at me... by mile 9 it was "one leg in front of the other" and by the last 1/2 mile i was booking it to the end so i could stop as soon as possible...
i'm getting frustrated b/c my legs and breathing are still fresh on the long runs, but my knees have been crating havoc... like, havoc even my worst shin splints couldn't create in high school. hitting up fleet feet tmrw (hopefully) and i think i'm going to have them check my stride, make sure i'm fitted for the correct shoe...
tip i just learned from my colleague on our running blog, http://xanga.com/summerrun
don't overstretch... you probably don't but i'm the biggest culprit... it may be the source of my problems.
whewf, easy week this week... i almost feel guilty that it's such a low mileage week... isn't that disturbing? like, i feel like i should be running more...
one more thing concerning water. my roommate (ran a marathon a couple years ago) highly recommended getting a fuel belt.
they're the belts you wear around your waist that come with 2-4 mini water bottles evenly spread apart to distribute the weight evenly... they also come with pockets for keys and gels... she says they were a lifesaver for her... run $25-50 a pop. i saw a bunch on e-bay for $30. not sure if i'm going to invest in that. on my longer runs i may have to double back to my starting point for a water break, or drop of a water bottle on my route b4 running it...
slippery man beat out mr. rubber, huh? i'm proud of you for running so much! woo hoo! i'm on week 5 of ultimate once a week, and i thought i was in better shape... good thing frisbee folks are nice.
